Parents of young actors are often automatically labelled "pushy". In reality, very few people outside the industry understand our child's desire to perform. While there are always a few over enthusiastic parents, the vast majority of us want simply to support our children. We encourage them in their acting, dancing and singing in the same way we take them to soccer or swimming. But how can those of us with no experience find them the best opportunities to do what they love best?
Most schools other than those specifically dedicated to the performing arts, have only a limited range of drama and music courses available. However, local recreation centers, theaters, and drama schools often run after school courses to introduce youngsters to acting and other disciplines. Use the internet to search for "drama for children" in your local area. Drama Kids International and Stagecoach are two well known names. Many performing arts schools run camps for children in the summer as well.
Once your child is busy training, you could start your search for potential auditions and castings. First, there are a number of helpful websites which are free to use such as Mandy; Casting Call Pro; and Feature Film Casting. These sites list many castings including those for non-paying roles in low budget films or student projects. These opportunities give the young actor experience and perhaps the first professional credit on his resume. In my experience, film students tend to grow up to be real live directors and producers who remember the actors in their first films. Two excellent sites which charge minimal fees are Actors Access and Showfax. These sites are linked so that you can both obtain audition scripts and submit your child's details directly to the casting director.
