US-based airlines United and Continental have announced a $3.2 billion deal to merge and create the world’s largest airline. On Monday the 3rd of May, 2010, the two carriers revealed that the merged airline would make Continental’s headquarters in Houston, Texas, the number one air hub.
The new carrier will go by United Airline’s name, but keep the Continental colours and logo, and is expected to carry more than 144 million passengers a year to 370 destinations in 59 countries.
In a statement announcing the merger, Continental CEO Jeffery Smisek said, “This combination brings together the best of both organizations and cultures to create a world-class airline with tremendous and enduring strengths. Together, we will have the financial strength necessary to make critical investments to continue to improve our products and services and to achieve and sustain profitability.”
